What Does a Dental Exam Entail?

An inspection of your oral cavity and its many structures is done during a dental exam. This includes your teeth and gums, tongue, cheeks, the top and bottom of your mouth, and lips. Your dentist may feel along your jaw and down the length of your neck to see if there are any irregular lumps. X-rays are also done because to determine the health of entities the naked eye cannot see, such as tooth roots, sinuses, nerves, and the jawbone.

This treatment only takes a few minutes and does not cause any pain or discomfort. Your medical and dental history is reviewed, and you’ll be asked about your regular hygiene habits at home, like how often you brush and floss. Be honest with your dentist because they are there to help you.

What Our Local Dental Practice Offers

Ione Dental is happy to offer several different types of dental exams. Each one is explained in detail below:

  1. Bio-Mechanical: During this exam, our dentist in Mississauga will assess your teeth one by one to understand their condition. They will make note of any issues that are present, such as decay amalgamation, chips or cracks, signs of gingivitis, worn enamel, or broken restorations. Based on this information, we can devise a treatment that targets your specific requirements.
  2. Periodontal: A periodontal, or gum and bone exam, is performed to determine if gum disease has developed. We measure the length of your gums to see if they’ve begun to recede and look for indications of bleeding or infection. If your gums measure 3mm, they are healthy; if the tissue length is anything greater than 3mm, then there is some reason for concern, and additional treatment may be needed.
  3. Functional: This exam assesses your bite, specifically how well your teeth fit together. Our dentist will evaluate your temporomandibular (TMJ) joint, which allows your jaw to move. We will also look for signs of tooth wear (bruxism) and if any other issues have occurred because of an irregular bite. This can include tooth fragmentation or enamel erosion.
  4. Cosmetic: We recommend coming in for a cosmetic exam if you want to improve the shape, colour, or alignment of your teeth. We’ll talk about your aesthetic goals and evaluate your smile to identify the available options. Each treatment will be explained in detail so you can make the best decision for your smile, one that will leave you feeling confident and beautiful.
