Understanding Dental Bridges
Though there are 4 primary styles of bridges available, the general structure consists of an artificial tooth that fills in the gap between your teeth and restorations that keep it in place. Porcelain is frequently used to make this structure because it blends in nicely with the rest of your smile. It is also stain-resistant and can last for multiple years.
Each type of bridge is outlined below:
- Traditional: A single pontic is bordered on two sides by dental crowns. These abutments keep the pontic from moving or falling out. This is one of the most common types of bridges.
- Maryland: A metal framework is attached to the back of your teeth, which holds the pontic in place. No dental crowns are required. It is also known as a resin-bonded bridge.
- Cantilever: Cantilever bridges are similar to traditional ones. The biggest difference is that only one dental crown is used. This option is often recommended if you’ve lost a tooth near the back of your mouth.
- Implant-Supported: A titanium implant is installed into the jawbone, then the bridge is set on top. The implants provided immense support for the restoration and your overall smile. Since this process involves surgery, you’ll need to give your mouth time to recover between appointments.
Acquiring a Bridge at Iona Dental
When you visit us for restorative dental care, our compassionate, talented staff will walk you through each step, ensuring your comfort and answering all your questions. Placing a dental bridge is a routine treatment and can be done in two appointments. Here is what you can expect when you come in:
- Evaluation: One of our dentists in Mississauga will examine your teeth to assess their condition. We’ll also go through your dental and medical background and help you choose the best type of bridge for your smile.
- Impressions: Impressions are taken to ensure the restoration fits. This is sent to a dental laboratory to guide the technicians creating your bridge.
- Temporary Bridge: A temporary bridge is provided to stop your teeth from shifting.
- Permanent Bridge: It will take a couple of weeks for your customized bridge to be made. Once it’s ready, we’ll invite you back to the clinic so we can place it. Any adjustments that are needed will be done, and then you can go.
